Cybersecurity for a healthcare organisation: CYVERRA designed and deployed a comprehensive Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) security architecture and zero-trust microsegmentation strategy across 12 acute hospital facilities. The Challenge

The healthcare provider faced acute operational risk due to a rapid proliferation of connected biomedical equipment, including infusion pumps, vital sign monitors, and imaging modalities across 12 hospital sites. A significant portion of these legacy medical devices operated on proprietary or end-of-life operating systems that could not support traditional endpoint detection and response (EDR) agents. A historically flat local area network architecture created severe exposure to lateral movement from potential ransomware outbreaks and unauthorized network traversal. Clinical teams lacked unified visibility into device communications, leaving unmanaged medical assets and shadow IoT devices vulnerable to exploitation without triggering security alerts. Furthermore, strict regulatory requirements and patient safety mandates meant that any cybersecurity controls had to be implemented without causing downtime, network latency, or disruption to active clinical workflows and telemetry streams.

Our Approach

CYVERRA executed an evidence-based cyber transformation programme structured around zero-trust principles and non-disruptive deployment methods. The team first implemented passive network traffic analysis and behavioral profiling engines to discover, classify, and risk-score every connected biomedical and IT asset across the clinical environment without active scanning risks. With comprehensive asset topologies established, CYVERRA architected a software-defined microsegmentation framework. Network policies were decoupled from physical infrastructure, enforcing least-privilege communication rules based on device identity, manufacturer profiles, and clinical protocols such as DICOM and HL7. Clinical workstations, enterprise systems, and life-critical IoMT devices were isolated into distinct micro-perimeters. To ensure sustainable protection, CYVERRA integrated the IoMT telemetry streams into a centralized Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) platform. Automated containment playbooks were established to quarantine anomalous medical devices at the port or switch level without severing redundant patient telemetry feeds.

The Outcome

The engagement delivered comprehensive visibility and real-time defense across more than 35,000 connected devices, eliminating unmanaged blind spots across all acute care campuses. Automated device classification and risk profiling enabled the security team to continuously validate hardware integrity against national vulnerability databases without impacting medical device warranty or certification. The zero-trust segmentation architecture reduced the internal lateral attack surface by 78%, ensuring that potential compromises within administrative subnets could not pivot into clinical networks. Mean time to isolate compromised or malfunctioning medical endpoints dropped from several hours to under four minutes, establishing robust compliance with health sector security standards.
