Digital Channel Modernisation for a Diversified Banking Group
CYVERRA engineered an event-driven digital engagement layer and unified API middleware to modernise retail and commercial banking journeys. The programme decoupled legacy core systems to deliver straight-through onboarding and omni-channel account servicing.

Mid-tier European retail and commercial banking provider
- Under 8 minutes
- Digital account opening time
- -46%
- Onboarding drop-off rate
- -32%
- Direct servicing operational cost
- -65%
- Core API response latency
The Challenge
The institution operated across fragmented retail and commercial divisions, burdened by legacy core banking systems that required batch processing and manual data validation. New account opening processes spanned multiple business days, forcing customers into physical branches to complete identity verification and mandate sign-offs. Disjointed systems between mobile, web, and internal servicing desks generated severe data discrepancies. Customer support teams frequently lacked real-time visibility into transaction lifecycles and pending requests, driving up contact centre volumes and resulting in onboarding abandonment rates exceeding 40% in digital channels. Furthermore, rigid monolithic architectures hindered compliance with evolving open banking standards and delayed new product releases. The bank required an agile, secure digital channel architecture that could integrate smoothly with existing mainframe records without compromising transactional integrity.
Our Approach
CYVERRA architected and deployed a modular micro-frontends layer supported by an event-driven integration platform built on Apache Kafka and Kubernetes. This abstraction layer decoupled consumer-facing interfaces from the underlying legacy core, enabling real-time transaction processing and uniform state synchronization across web, mobile, and branch portals. Our engineering teams implemented straight-through digital onboarding pipelines integrating biometrics, automated e-KYC/AML screening, and instant document parsing. Role-based access controls, robust OpenID Connect authentication, and envelope-level data encryption via HashiCorp Vault were embedded to guarantee strict regulatory and data residency compliance. To ensure enterprise resilience, the delivery adhered to a phased strangler-fig migration pattern. Core services were shifted incrementally with comprehensive automated regression testing, automated canary deployments, and real-time observability pipelines monitoring end-to-end API health.
The Outcome
The modernised digital architecture reduced retail and SME account opening times from four business days to under eight minutes. Digital channel abandonment dropped significantly, enabling the bank to capture high-volume digital acquisition campaigns without expanding back-office operations. Operational servicing costs declined as self-service capabilities handled routine tasks such as limit adjustments, debit card issuance, and statement generation. The institution now releases new digital features bi-weekly instead of quarterly, providing an extensible platform for future open finance initiatives.
