Digital transformation for a energy & utilities organisation: CYVERRA designed and deployed a cloud-native operational platform integrating telemetry ingestion, smart meter data management, and automated field dispatch. The transformation eliminated manual billing bottlenecks and gave operational teams real-time visibility across distributed infrastructure.

The Challenge

The utility operator managed a complex hybrid infrastructure encompassing legacy district heating networks, municipal power grids, and rapidly expanding community solar assets. Core business operations were fragmented across siloed legacy billing engines, proprietary SCADA monitoring consoles, and paper-based field dispatch logs. This fragmented technology landscape prevented the business from scaling operations efficiently as distributed energy assets multiplied. The accelerating deployment of smart meters generated massive influxes of time-series consumption data that overwhelmed legacy relational databases. Data validation required extensive manual reconciliation by billing teams, creating delayed invoicing cycles, unbilled consumption leaks, and poor responsiveness to customer service and grid anomaly alerts.

Our Approach

CYVERRA executed an end-to-end digital transformation programme, establishing an event-driven integration platform built on Microsoft Azure. We engineered a high-throughput ingestion pipeline using Apache Kafka to collect, cleanse, and normalise time-series telemetry from more than 250,000 smart endpoints and remote terminal units across the grid in near real time. Our delivery team integrated a scalable Meter Data Management (MDM) engine with the client's core ERP billing system via enterprise APIs. Alongside data orchestration, we deployed a mobile-first field workforce management application equipped with dynamic routing, real-time asset diagnostic data, and offline-capable digital work orders to streamline field maintenance and connection tasks.

The Outcome

The modernised digital architecture transformed the utility's end-to-end operations from scheduled batch processing to proactive, real-time grid and revenue management. Meter-to-cash turnaround dropped significantly, while automated validation routines reduced billing exceptions to negligible levels across all municipal operating zones. Operational dispatch efficiency improved markedly through real-time telemetry feeding directly into technician workflows. The scalable platform architecture now provides the utility with the computational headroom required to seamlessly onboard new distributed energy resources and municipal networks without requiring linear headcount expansion.
